Pan de Muerto is a ritual oil created for offerings, hospitality, nourishment, and the sacred act of setting something aside for the dead.

Pan de muerto—bread of the dead—is one of the foods most closely associated with Día de los Muertos. Recipes, shapes, and regional traditions vary throughout Mexico, but the familiar sweet, aromatic bread is prepared during the season and commonly placed on ofrendas as an offering to deceased loved ones. Food placed on an altar is not simply decoration; it is an act of remembrance and hospitality, often chosen because it was something the person loved or because it carries meaning within the celebration.

Where Ofrenda is designed to prepare and dedicate the sacred space itself, Pan de Muerto is centered on what we give within that space. It can be worked alongside food, drink, flowers, tobacco, incense, and other offerings placed for ancestors and beloved dead.

There is something deeply human about feeding the people we love. We cook for birthdays and holidays. We bring food when someone is grieving. We remember what someone always ordered, what they made every Christmas, what candy they kept in a drawer, or exactly how they took their coffee. Death does not erase those memories.

Pan de Muerto turns that instinct toward the altar.

Each bottle is handcrafted, ritually worked, and magically charged as part of The Brewery Co.'s Día de los Muertos 2026 Collection. Its herbs and fragrance were deliberately built around the warmth of bread, spice, sweetness, citrus, and the act of giving something lovingly prepared. A pinch of biodegradable glitter floats throughout the oil to resemble the sparkling dusting of sugar on pan de muerto—a small visual detail inspired by the bread itself.

Botanical & Magical Components

Pan de Muerto contains a warm blend of Star Anise, Orange Peel, Cempasúchil, Tobacco, Allspice, Clove, Calendula, and Honey, selected within this formula around offering, warmth, hospitality, gratitude, and nourishment.

Honey sits naturally at the center of the formula's offering symbolism, bringing sweetness and generosity to the work. Orange peel, star anise, allspice, and clove create warmth and abundance, while cempasúchil connects the formula to Día de los Muertos and the welcoming of the dead.

Tobacco contributes an offering-oriented element to the work, while calendula adds warmth and brightness to a formula intended to feel generous, abundant, and welcoming.

A pinch of biodegradable glitter is added to resemble the sugar sparkling across the surface of pan de muerto. It isn't included for a magical correspondence—it's simply a tiny detail meant to carry a little more of the bread itself into the appearance of the oil.

Scent Profile

Pan de Muerto is unapologetically warm and gourmand. The fragrance was built to suggest sweet bread, almond, creamy horchata, orange, and aromatic spice rather than smelling like a generic bakery fragrance.

Almond and marzipan dominate the fragrance, giving it a rich confectionary nuttiness. Almond macaroon and condensed milk create the impression of sweet, creamy pastry, while horchata brings creamy rice milk, cinnamon, vanilla, and sugar into the blend.

Blood orange cuts through the richness with a small flash of citrus, while pure star anise essential oil gives the finished fragrance its distinctive aromatic spice.

How to Use

For offerings and an ofrenda:

Use Pan de Muerto to dress a candle burned alongside offerings or to anoint appropriate altar tools, offering dishes, petitions, or other ritual objects. It can be worked while preparing or placing food and drink for someone who has passed, particularly when the offering carries a personal connection to them.

Do not add the oil itself to food, beverages, or other edible offerings. This is a ritual product and is not edible.

For ancestor and beloved-dead work:

Use while preparing a loved one's favorite meal, baking a family recipe, pouring their favorite drink, setting out coffee, lighting incense, or otherwise intentionally offering something in their memory.

You can speak their name while preparing the offering, tell them why you chose it, share a memory associated with it, or simply set it down with the understanding:

This collection is for everyone. You do not have to be Mexican or Hispanic to honor your dead, remember the people you love, or find meaning in these traditions. But being welcomed into another culture comes with a responsibility to respect it—to learn where these traditions come from, honor the people who have carried them, listen to and elevate the voices of those within that culture, and embrace the culture rather than separating the beautiful parts from the people they belong to.
