El Catrín — Tobacco, Oud & Amber Cologne Oil

El Catrín is a rich, masculine-leaning cologne oil inspired by El Catrín—the sharply dressed gentleman of Mexican visual culture, recognizable by his elegant clothing, polished appearance, and unmistakable air of confidence.

For this fragrance, I wanted him dressed impeccably and smelling like he has somewhere important to be.

El Catrín opens with blood orange and petitgrain, giving the darker fragrance a flash of bitter citrus and green brightness. Sweet tobacco quickly takes over, surrounded by warm cardamom, leather, cedarwood, tonka, and oud. Amber Noir adds depth and sensuality, while a touch of condensed milk softens the composition with a subtle creamy richness.

The result is dark, warm, sophisticated, and quietly seductive. It's masculine without becoming a generic men's cologne and sweet without turning gourmand.

Think pressed suit, polished shoes, tobacco, dark woods, expensive leather, and a drink poured after dinner.

Tobacco becomes the center of the fragrance as it develops, surrounded by dry cedarwood and smooth leather. It's warm and masculine, but deliberately polished rather than rugged or smoky.

Tonka, oud, and deep amber create a warm, lingering base. A small touch of condensed milk rounds the darker notes with creamy sweetness without making the fragrance smell overtly milky.

The Inspiration

Where La Catrina is extravagant florals, dark fruit, and an enormous hat, El Catrín is her impeccably dressed counterpart.

The word catrín has historically referred to a fashionably or elegantly dressed man, and the figure became familiar in Mexican popular imagery, including the traditional game of Lotería.

I wanted the fragrance to carry that same sense of presentation.

He isn't wandering through the woods chopping firewood. He isn't covered in smoke. He's dressed.

The tobacco is sweet rather than ashy. The leather is polished rather than worn. The woods are smooth. Bitter citrus keeps everything sharp, while cardamom, amber, oud, and tonka give it enough richness to feel almost decadent.

El Catrín smells like a man who dressed for the occasion.

How to Wear

Apply the cologne oil to pulse points such as the wrists and neck and allow it to warm naturally against the skin.

Oil-based fragrance wears closer to the body than a traditional alcohol-based cologne, creating a more intimate scent that develops with your skin chemistry throughout wear.

Although El Catrín was designed as a masculine-leaning fragrance, fragrance has no gender. If tobacco, leather, amber, oud, and dark woods are your thing, wear it.
