Calaverita — Sugar Skull Perfume Oil

Calaverita is a bright, playful gourmand perfume oil inspired by the calaveritas de azúcar—sugar skulls—created for Día de los Muertos.

Sugar skulls are traditionally made from molded sugar and decorated with colorful icing, foil, and other embellishments. They may be placed on an ofrenda, sometimes bearing the name of a deceased loved one, and they reflect something essential to Día de los Muertos: death does not have to be represented only through darkness or sorrow.

So Calaverita was never going to be a serious perfume.

This one is sugar on top of sugar.

Pink spun-sugar sweetness forms the center of the fragrance, surrounded by juicy tropical fruit and hibiscus. A splash of fruity cereal makes it colorful, nostalgic, and just a little ridiculous in exactly the right way. Condensed milk adds creamy sweetness before toasted marshmallow settles underneath everything with a warm, fluffy finish.

The result smells bright, sugary, creamy, fruity, and unapologetically fun—like someone took the colors of a beautifully decorated sugar skull and turned them into a fragrance.

Hibiscus gives the fruity sweetness a lightly floral dimension while condensed milk brings in a rich, creamy quality that rounds out the sharper candy notes.

Warm toasted marshmallow settles underneath the fragrance, leaving behind a soft, fluffy sweetness as the brighter fruit notes fade.

The Inspiration

Calaverita means “little skull,” and the name felt perfect for the sweetest fragrance in this collection.

Día de los Muertos is filled with imagery that would be considered macabre in another context—skeletons, skulls, graves, and the dead themselves—but they're surrounded by brilliant flowers, food, music, color, humor, and affection.

Sugar skulls capture that contrast beautifully.

They're skulls.

And they're made out of sugar.

That combination is exactly what I wanted Calaverita to feel like: something associated with death transformed through color, sweetness, creativity, and remembrance into something joyful.

No smoke. No dark woods. No mysterious incense hiding underneath it.

Just give the little skull some sugar.

How to Wear

Apply the perfume oil to pulse points such as the wrists and neck and allow it to warm naturally against the skin.

Perfume oils wear closer to the body than traditional alcohol-based perfumes, creating a more intimate fragrance that develops with your natural skin chemistry throughout wear.

Calaverita is especially suited to anyone who loves sweet indie perfumes, candy scents, fruity gourmands, cereal fragrances, and marshmallow-heavy scents.

About This Collection

This collection is for everyone. You do not have to be Mexican or Hispanic to honor your dead, remember the people you love, or find meaning in these traditions. But being welcomed into another culture comes with a responsibility to respect it—to learn where these traditions come from, honor the people who have carried them, listen to and elevate the voices of those within that culture, and embrace the culture rather than separating the beautiful parts from the people they belong to.
